- No new sports betting laws are needed to open sportsbooks in Oregon.
- The Oregon Lottery is also in the process of opening up sportsbooks.
LINCOLN CITY, Ore. – The Chinook Winds Casino Resort could be one of the first to open a sportsbook in Oregon.
Chinook Winds Casino Resort has a new sports betting page on their website. On this page, they said that the casino will open a new sportsbook “soon”. They also have listed out the rules for their upcoming sportsbook as well.
How Is This Possible?
Sports betting has been legal in Oregon for years now. Oregon was one of the four states that were grandfathered into the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). At the time, Oregon could only offer sports lottery tickets. They eventually stopped and could not create new laws or rules due to PASPA.
Now that PASPA has been repealed, the Oregon Lottery is free to create new sports betting regulations. For the past few months, the Oregon Lottery has been in the process of setting up sports betting. The Lottery partnered with SBTech to accomplish this.
Sports Betting At Chinook Winds
The Chinook Winds Casino is owned by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon. This group of tribes has what is known as a tribal compact between them and the state. This compact allows them to operate independently from the state and run casinos.
Within the compact, there is a key clause that allows them to move forward with sportsbook operations. Anything the Oregon Lottery offers as a game; the tribes can offer as well. At this point, the Oregon Lottery does technically offer sports betting. They just have not launched it yet. That allows the Oregon Tribes to offer sports betting as well.
This is like how New Mexico is currently offering sports betting. The tribes in New Mexico can offer any Class III games and sports betting qualifies as such. This is despite the fact that no sports betting laws have passed in New Mexico.Through this compact, the Chinook Winds Casino could be the first sportsbook in Oregon, though no official announcement has been made. The Oregon Lottery is still planning to launch their sportsbooks during the early part of NFL season.
